Introduction to Tense

Tense shows the time of an action. There are three main tenses:

  • Present
  • Past
  • Future

Each tense has four aspects:

Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous

🔹 1. PRESENT TENSE

1️⃣ Present Simple: S + V1 (s/es with he/she/it)

Use: Habit, Fact, General truth. (Ex: She plays football.)

2️⃣ Present Continuous: S + am/is/are + V-ing

Use: Action happening now. (Ex: They are studying now.)

3️⃣ Present Perfect: S + has/have + V3

Use: Completed action with present result. (Ex: I have visited Pokhara.)

4️⃣ Present Perfect Continuous: S + has/have been + V-ing

Use: Action started in past and still continuing.

🔹 2. PAST TENSE

1️⃣ Past Simple: S + V2

Ex: She played football yesterday.

2️⃣ Past Continuous: S + was/were + V-ing

Ex: They were studying when I called.

3️⃣ Past Perfect: S + had + V3

Ex: She had finished before I arrived.

4️⃣ Past Perfect Continuous: S + had been + V-ing

Ex: She had been studying for two hours before dinner.

🔹 3. FUTURE TENSE

1️⃣ Future Simple: S + will + V1

Ex: I will help you.

2️⃣ Future Continuous: S + will be + V-ing

Ex: She will be studying at 8 pm.

3️⃣ Future Perfect: S + will have + V3

Ex: She will have finished by 10 pm.

4️⃣ Future Perfect Continuous: S + will have been + V-ing

Ex: She will have been studying for three hours by 9 pm.
