What Are Articles?
Articles are a, an, and the. They are used before nouns to show whether something is general or specific.
✅ Rules for Using A / An
1️⃣ Before a singular, countable, non-specific noun
• I saw a bird.
• She bought an umbrella.
2️⃣ Before a word that begins with a vowel sound
(Sound is important, not spelling)
• an apple
• an hour (silent h)
• an honest man
• a university (ju sound)
• a European country

• She is a teacher.
• He is an engineer.
4️⃣ To mean “one”
• I need a pen.
• She bought a dress.
5️⃣ With expressions of quantity
• a dozen eggs
• a couple of days
✅ Rules for Using THE
1️⃣ When something is already mentioned: I saw a dog. The dog was barking.
2️⃣ When something is unique: The sun, The moon, The Earth.
3️⃣ With superlatives: the tallest, the best, the most beautiful.
4️⃣ When listener knows which one: Close the door, Pass the salt.
5️⃣ With musical instruments: She plays the guitar.

6️⃣ Rivers, Oceans, Deserts: The Nile, The Atlantic Ocean, The Sahara Desert.
7️⃣ With newspapers: The Kathmandu Post, The New York Times.
8️⃣ With groups: The Sharma family, The football team.
9️⃣ With historical events: The Renaissance, The First World War.
🔟 No Article (Zero Article)
No Article is used in these cases:
- With languages: She speaks English.
- With plural nouns (general): Dogs are loyal.
- With uncountable nouns (general): Milk is healthy.
- With most countries: Nepal, India, China.
